14th June 2025 - Tod

A walk down to Morrisons via the canal. I have occasionally written of the plants and vegetables growing in my town of Todmorden, it is has been given the name of 'Incredible Edible'.  At the moment it is all looking beautiful, so on my hunting out of cat food for a very picky cat I took this half mile walk.
We seem to have missed the storms, Andrew went out early to walk up to Stoodley Pike, a very long uphill walk and just missed the few drops of rain that fell on the way back.
Tod still tries to keep the somewhat old fashioned market both inside market and outside one and we do have vegetable boxes from the larger area of Yorkshire.  We lost internet yesterday it was a weird experience not being able to read my mail this morning.  But all is fine now, a switch off and then switch on and lo and behold - the world came into focus again.

  1. I remember hearing about that Incredible Edible group before. Sounds like it works very well. Have you picked from any of the plots?
I think we have too many people in Naperville to make this work here. We do have large garden plots that people can rent each summer to plant if they don't have space in their yard. My brother has a plot and since he is on vacation this week, my son, my sister and I keep up the watering for him. We get produce from him then for helping out.

    1. No I haven't picked anything yet Ellen. Really fancy the gooseberries but every time I go looking for them each year they have all disappeared.

  3. Just been reading about little visited parts of the UK in the Telegraph, and they highlight Calder Valley, and have this to say about Tod:
"but then there’s the brooding, eternally misty Todmorden, which is home to an indoor market serving impressively good coffee."

    1. We also have a rather novel Folklore Centre which also has a small restaurant Will. Not much in the way of fine dining but the Staff of Life just outside Tod is good. Also two good cheese places, one in the indoor market and the other on the road out of Tod. Have I sold it yet? ;)

    1. Yes it is a good walk Andrew, if the weather is right of course. The sun lifts the dark grey of the houses.

  5. What a lovely glimpse into life in Tod! The idea of ‘Incredible Edible’ always warms my hearthow special to see fresh vegetables growing around town.

That canal walk sounds peaceful, even with the picky cat mission! And glad you avoided the storms.

It’s funny how losing the internet for a bit can feel disorienting, but sometimes it’s a nice reminder to slow down until we flip the switch and reconnect again.

  6. Well I suppose it is not lost entirely only on computers and tablets, phones still work Asep. We need the storms as Yorkshire is going into drought mode, at least we need the rain.

  7. i do love todmorden..... the mention of kale made me laugh because of the old adage..... "if you add coconut oil to your kale....... it makes it much easier to scrape it straight into the bin"..... personally, i like a bit of crispy, roasted kale......

  8. Kale is a very strong member of the cabbage family needs some adjusting to. I think they need to think food distribution in another way. Because it is not actually teaching people how to love kale! The gardeners in fact always gather up at the Unitarian church for a meal on Sundays after work on the flowerbeds.
